Giveaway – A Kitchen Witch
In honor of autumn, I went a little creative and asked a local artisan to provide this month’s giveaway, a handcrafted kitchen witch. A kitchen witch is a whimsical, protective doll traditionally kept in kitchens to bring good luck and guard the home. Rooted in European folklore, she was believed to prevent cooking mishaps, sour moods, and household misfortune. Today, kitchen witches are cherished as charming symbols of warmth, protection, and a touch of everyday magic.

Here’s an interview with Austin artisan Lauren McDaniel of The Threaded Crone:
What first inspired you to start creating magical décor pieces?
I’ve always been very interested in the folklore and history of witches. I loved movies like The Craft, The Crucible and Practical Magic growing up. Last year, I took a trip to Germany and Austria to visit the Christmas Markets. While there, I learned about kitchen witches. After reading more about them, I decided to try and make some. I started by using fabric from my wedding dress and making witches for everyone that was in my bridal party. Once I started, I couldn’t stop! I love making each one with their own little quirks!
October is your busy season. Do you have a favorite item you love making for Halloween?
I currently only make kitchen witches, but am looking to expand in the future. Maybe onto hats and brooms!
Every artisan has a favorite project. Is there one piece you made that you secretly wanted to keep for yourself?
There have been many witches I wanted to keep for myself! But I have only kept two that really spoke to me; Sage Kettlewick who sits in my kitchen and watches over my stews and Tessa Tonic who sits on our bar as our mixology witch. Both have been featured on my Instagram.
Do you have any witchy rituals, music, or routines that inspire you while you work?
I like to have witchy movies playing in the background while I work. Also a great herby-smelling candle or palo santo/sage burning to make my craft room feel like the kitchen.
For readers who want to support local artisans like you, what’s the best way to connect, shop, or follow along with your creations?
